In the 30ies the CTF decided to build an outdoor pool in order to rise the memberships. The project was given to Gherardo Bosio, one of the most renowned Italian rationalists who had already carried out the construction of a clubhouse for the Ugolino Golf Club which is nowadays considered to be one of the best architectural sporting buildings of the 30ies.
His untimely death in 1942 prevented him from finishing important urban projects in Italy and abroad. In 1935, Bosio had realized a pool that would serve as a model for the CTF’s pool built in 1939. Pierluigi Nervi (architect and engineer as well as specialist of reinforced cement constructions and one of the protagonists of Italian post-war architecture) participated in the projection and execution of the pool. In 1932 Nervi had already realized the City Football Stadium with the famous penthouse which became a national monument.
The pool of the CTF, beautiful example of rationalist architecture, measures 25m by 12,5m and is made out of cement, originally clad with baked clay tinted in light blue. The maximum depth is at 3,75m. The spring-board of 3,5m height made of reinforced cement and a highly resistant conglomerate (developed by Nervi and Bosio) unifies in a wonderful way the stairs and the platform. Closeby you will find the locker rooms made out of brick and cement. The pool is surrounded by the original pavement of artificial stone squares . The strict proportional balance and the modernity of the architecture lead to a harmony and elegance that leaves the pool’s appearance still up to date after more than 60 years.
